Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI)

An epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure that helps relieve neck, back, arm, and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves that can be caused by spinal stenosis or disc herniation. Medications are delivered to the epidural space, which is a fat-filled area between the bone and the protective sac of the spinal nerves. Pain relief after an epidural injection may last from several days to years. The goal is to reduce pain so that you may resume normal activities.

What is an epidural steroid injection (ESI)?

A steroid injection is a cortocosteroid and an anesthetic numbing agent. These medications are injected into the epidural space of the spine which is between the bony vertebra and the protective dura sac that sorrounds the spinal cord and nerves (see Fig. 1)

Trigger point injection (TPI) is an option for treating painful areas of the muscle that are caused when muscles do not relax. Knots in the muscle can sometimes be felt under the skin. Some trigger points can irritate the nerves that are around them and cause referred pain (pain that is felt elsewhere on the body)

What Happens During a TPI?

Your doctor will insert a small needle into your trigger point. The medication includes a local anesthetic or saline, and may include a corticosteroid. Relief is experienced not only in the affected muscle but in the referred pain as well.
