What is a Breast Revision?

Breast revision is a surgical procedure that aims to correct the mistakes, complications, or unwanted results from primary breast surgery. You may consider a breast revision for several reasons, such as correcting surgical errors, changing the breast implant size, removing an implant, or addressing complications arising from the surgery. Brand Surgical Institute is led by nationally renowned plastic surgeons who provide the most effective and personalized solutions for your breast revision surgery.

What are the possible reasons for a breast revision?

Surgical Errors

You may experience surgical errors for several reasons. Inexperienced surgeons may use improper surgical techniques that increase the risk of complications or provide undesirable results. Furthermore, if you undergo a breast augmentation without correcting sagging breasts with a breast lift, the increased weight of the implant may cause further sagging.

Breast Size

You may undergo breast revision if you’re unhappy with the size of your breast implants. If you don’t like the shape, size, or texture of your breasts after undergoing an augmentation, you may want to replace the implant with another implant shape or size. In this case, breast revision surgery helps you achieve the desired breast size and contours.

Implant Rupture

You will need breast revision surgery if your saline or silicone implant ruptures. If your saline implant ruptures, your breasts will look noticeably deflated. But if your silicone implant ruptures, you won’t notice the deflation externally — the only way to detect a silicone implant rupture is through MRI scans. If you have a ruptured implant, revision surgery is necessary.

Breast Rippling

When saline implants get ruptured, the sterile salt water leaks out and gets absorbed by the body. When that happens, the ripples of the saline implant shell can be visible on the outside, making your breast look rippled and wrinkled. This is particularly common amongst extremely thin women with minimal breast tissues to reduce the rippling effect.

Double Bubble

A double bubble is a rare complication wherein the breast implant drops behind the breast crease or drapes over the breast, leading to an unnatural indentation that gives the appearance of a double breast. The double bubble complication usually occurs because of capsular contracture or if an inexperienced surgeon uses incorrect surgical techniques.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is a complication caused by the formation of excess scar tissues around an implant. When scar tissues form around the implant, the breast may feel hard and tight. During breast revision surgery, the surgeon will remove the scar tissues from the implant. Silicone implants have a higher risk of capsular contracture than silicone implants.

Bottoming Out

After the breast augmentation surgery, the implant may shift out of position because of gravity, aging, injuries, trauma, and other factors. When the implant position changes, you may need breast revision surgery to restore the optimal position or replace the implant.

Implant Removal

You may need breast revision surgery if you want to remove an implant completely. The surgeon will remove the unwanted implants and tighten the surrounding skin tissues to make your breasts look firm, taut, and natural.

You are the ideal candidate for breast revision if:

  • You want to improve the cosmetic results of your primary breast surgery
  • You want to change the shape or size of your breast implant
  • You want to remove the breast implant
  • You are experiencing breast implant complications, such as capsular contracture
  • You are physically healthy
  • You have realistic expectations from the procedure
  • You are a nonsmoker or willing to stop smoking before or after the procedure

What happens during breast revision?

Brand Surgical Institute performs a highly personalized breast revision after a thorough evaluation. During your consultation, the surgeon will examine your anatomy, administer a breast exam, discuss your goals and expectations, and determine if you have any complications. The specific details of the procedure will depend on your condition and goals, including whether you have any complications if you want to remove or replace an implant and other factors.

In most cases, the surgeon will try using the previous surgery’s incision for the procedure so there are no new scars. But some cases may necessitate making a new incision — our surgeons always create incisions along natural creases, so they’re not very visible. Breast revisions are usually performed as outpatient procedures under general anesthesia in our accredited surgical facility. Most procedures conclude within an hour or two, following which you can return home.

What is recovery like after breast revision?

The recovery period after the breast revision surgery will be similar to that after the primary breast surgery. You must wear compression garments or supportive bras for a few weeks to minimize swelling. You can resume most of your daily activities and work after 1 to 2 weeks, but strenuous workouts should be avoided for 6 to 8 weeks. The scars will gradually dissipate and fade away.
