FAQ

What is an ambulatory surgical center?

Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), like Brand Surgical Institute, are modern healthcare facilities that focus on providing same-day surgical care, even diagnostic and preventive procedures. Patients who elect the convenience to have their surgery at Brand Surgical Institute arrive the day of the procedure, have the surgery in an operating room, and recover under the care of the nursing staff, all without hospital admission. Both patients and their families benefit from the comfortable and convenient environment of the ASC.

When I return home from my surgery, will I be able to resume my usual daily activities?

Once you return home, it is very important that you follow the home care instructions provided by your surgeon and discharge nurse. In addition, you may want to have assistance with caring for your children or large pets. Check with your surgeon prior to discharge regarding your schedule to resume normal activity.

When will I be discharged after my surgery?

With the advent of improved anesthetic and pain medications, the patient recovery experience has been enhanced. To be discharged, each patient must meet established criteria. Patients are discharged after postoperative nursing care and with the approval of the surgeon.

Financial Responsibility – What should I expect?

Brand Surgical Institute understands that healthcare costs have skyrocketed with more financial responsibility being directed to the patient. Deductibles and Coinsurance has gone up significantly. We strive to be transparent and provide patients with what their expected financial responsibility for the facility fee portion of their surgical care will be in advance. An effort is made to notify our patients at least several days in advance of any deductibles and copays that will be due before their upcoming procedure.

The following are few additional important points that will help our patients better understand the financial aspect of their surgery center visit:

  • Facility fees charged by Brand Surgical Institute are SEPARATE from the professional fees charged by your surgeon and anesthesiologist.
  • If applicable, there may be SEPARATE charges for pathology, lab and/or x-ray services.

Why is Brand Surgical out of network with my insurance plan?

Brand Surgical Institute aims to provide outstanding, high quality and state of the art care to our patients. We do not believe we should settle for anything less when providing high quality, caring, and compassionate services.

What should I do if I am not feeling well?

If you are not feeling well, please contact our office immediately during normal business hours at 818-243-9999. There are some surgeries which will be safer if delayed when you are sick. We need to know specific details to make the appropriate decision for your care. Please do not delay in communicating this information with us.

May I drive home?

Any patient that receives anesthesia should not drive until the next day unless they are taking any narcotic medications. A patient receiving sedation for a procedure needs a responsible adult as a ride home. Some patients have procedures under local anesthesia and could possibly drive home.

We strongly recommend for safety reasons that all patients who have surgery have a ride home and will be cared for by a responsible adult when they arrive home. Patients are not allowed to drive, walk or take any public transportation, including Uber and Lyft after sedation or anesthesia. Please make the appropriate arrangements prior to your scheduled procedure.

Who do I call if I have questions regarding my postoperative instructions?

Both your surgeon and the center will provide instructions, both verbally and written, for your care at home. Please feel free to contact your surgeon or the center for any questions or concerns you may have at any time. A nurse from the center will attempt to call you within 24-72 hours after your procedure to check on your recovery and answer any questions you may have.

Who do I contact about my bill if I have questions or problems?

Customer service for your account is provided onsite where your procedure was performed. Please contact your patient coordinator at Brand Surgical Institute.

Should I take my routine medications?

If you are concerned about continuing a current medication before your surgery, please contact the center ask to speak to a doctor.

What should I wear?

Please wear loose and comfortable clothing. Button-down shirts or blouses are best. Wear comfortable shoes such as house slippers that can be easily slipped on. Leave all jewelry at home, this also includes body-piercing jewelry. If you wear contact lenses, you will most likely have to remove them before surgery, so consider bringing your glasses as well. If you have to wear your contacts, please discuss this with your care team prior to surgery. Please do not wear any make-up.

Who may accompany me?

You may bring one person with you on your surgery day. If the patient is a minor often two parents and/or guardians may accompany him or her on surgery day.

Please refrain from bringing young children to the Brand Surgical Institute as guests.

May I speak to my anesthesiologist before the surgery?

All patients will be seen by the anesthesiologist on surgery day prior to entering the operating room. Sufficient time will be spent to answer any questions you may have. If you need to speak to the anesthesiologist before the day of surgery, you are welcome to call the Brand Surgical Institute and we will arrange for you to speak with an anesthesiologist.

We are committed to performing procedures that enable our patients to experience healthier, longer, and fulfilled lives. We are also dedicated to educating our patients so that they have the information they need to proceed with any surgery.
